The Sir George Earle Trophy
Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd
Toyota were selected as this year’s Sir George Earle Trophy Winners in the light of the level of excellence which they have achieved in developing their health and safety management systems and culture and their comprehensive approach to building the promotion of health, safety and welfare as an integral part of good corporate citizenship. In choosing Toyota as winner from a number of other high performing contenders, the Awards Panel were influenced not only by the company’s consistently low accident record but by their innovative approach to health and safety problem solving, including initiatives which they have taken to tackle musculo-skeletal disorders and improve off-the-job safety for employees. They were particularly impressed by the way in which Toyota’s ‘hands-on’ leadership of health and safety by senior managers was matched by the active and enthusiastic participation of each individual employee.
RoSPA Distinguished Service Award
Baroness Gibson of Market Rasen OBE
Baroness Gibson has made a long and distinguished contribution to occupational safety, particularly by championing the health and safety needs of women workers. From 1996 to 2000 she served as a member of the Health and Safety Commission and was influential in helping to plan and develop many new initiatives, particularly UK implementation of the European ‘pregnant workers directive’ and new HSC plans to tackle musculo-skeletal disorders and occupational stress. In 2000 she was made a member of the House of Lords where she is continuing to raise awareness of the importance of health and safety at work.

Phil Hughes
Phil Hughes has played a major role in the development and professionalisation of the role of the health and safety adviser. As President of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health from 1990 to 1991, he was influential in steering the Institution to establish the ‘Register of Safety Practitioners’. In 1996 he became chair of the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health where he has led the modernisation of the Board and the development of the syllabi for the new NEBOSH Diploma parts 1 and 2.

Marc Sapir
Together with colleagues in the European Trades Union Confederation, Marc was successful in securing the establishment of the European Trade Union Technical Bureau for Health and Safety. As a policy research, development and co-coordinating body, the Bureau has become a highly influential organisation in facilitating the input of trades unions at European level into the complex decision making processes underpinning the development of European safety standards and the development of EU health and safety law. Above all, his contribution has been one of focusing the ideas and aspirations of unions representing over 58 million workers in 28 European countries, into a positive force for strengthening the occupational health and safety regime in EU Member States and beyond.

Dr Janet Asherson
Janet Asherson has played a central role in co-coordinating the CBI’s input to health and safety policy making over the last 11 years. She helped develop the CBl’s health and safety policy advisory panel, which has had a key role in formulating the CBI’s response to virtually every recent legislative health and safety initiative by the UK Health and Safety Commission and the European Commission. As a member of the ECs ‘Luxembourg Committee’, Janet has also been a powerful influence, ensuring that plans to strengthen the European occupational health and safety regime take account of and enhance business competitiveness.

Jeremy Stranks
For over 30 years Jeremy Stranks has made an outstanding contribution to the training, education and support of health and safety professionals. He first became involved in industrial safety through the Institute of Environmental Health Officers. Jeremy has provided extensive support and encouragement to students in the field of health and safety and has assisted in numerous training projects, including aspects of environment and food safety. He assisted the original lOSH Education Committee in the setting and marking of the occupational health and hygiene examination papers, and was the principal author of the RoSPA Handbook of Health and Safety Practice.
