Developing leadership action – delivering on directors' health and safety responsibilities

Tuesday 13th May 2008 - Concourse Suite, NEC, Birmingham

This conference will focus on the critical developments from the last 12 months that have increased directors’ liabilities and help organisations to review and benchmark their strategies for meeting the new challenges.

Delegates will:

  • Gain an understanding of the strategic importance and business benefits of better H&S management.
  • Learn what key steps directors must take to lead the management of health and safety.
  • Hear how board level failure to lead H&S will be viewed by enforcing authorities.
  • Find out what penalties will be imposed on companies and directors when leadership falls short.
  • Gain an insight into the key risks, from slips and trips to driving for work.
  • Discover how directors and senior managers can up their game in this field.

Developing leadership actionWith clear and authoritative guidelines now established by the Health and Safety Commission and the Institute of Directors on directors’ H&S responsibilities, every organisation is challenged to review their corporate governance health and safety. Directors and senior managers need to be able to show that they have established clear objectives and put in place the policies, people and procedures to ensure consistent safe and healthy working. Ultimate responsibility for delivering in this key area cannot be delegated to technical experts.  Boards must assure themselves that they have taken all reasonable steps to manage health and safety risks, and have effective management systems in place, including arrangements for receiving professional advice and involving their workforce.

This conference, which includes nationally recognised speakers, is a unique opportunity for key decision makers and influencers to explore latest developments and assess how well the board of their organisation is:

  • Planning the direction for health and safety and setting targets;
  • Ensuring the delivery of effective risk management;
  • Monitoring, benchmarking and reporting; and
  • Reviewing performance and addressing shortcomings.

With the new offence of Corporate Manslaughter (CM) coming into force in 6th April 2008, there is an increasing focus in all organisations on the H&S responsibilities of directors and senior managers as individuals. By strengthening their systems and culture those boards that already take health and safety seriously will able to secure even greater business benefits. But those for leaders who still fail to engage, the consequences can be severe, especially if things go badly wrong. Penalties can include not only heavy fines, adverse publicity and remedial orders but disqualification and even imprisonment.

Your delegate package includes:

  • Attendance at all Congress sessions
  • Lunch
  • Refreshments
  • Copies of Congress papers
  • Entry to the Safety and Health Expo 2008 and co-located exhibitions
