BTEC Qualification - Recognising vocational driving competence

Instructors, drivers or riders passing an advanced test now can qualify for a BTEC vocational qualification.

The level 3 qualification, awarded by The Edexcel Foundation, demonstrates that a national standard has been achieved.

The BTEC qualification is considered easier to administer than National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) as the qualification is defined by what the candidate must be able to do, know and understand. It is also considered to be more appropriate for use in the area of vocational and occupational instruction, driving or riding and for many employers and clients are the preferred qualifications.

The BTEC qualification is achieved following a practical examination of a candidate’s skills in a range of competences, rather than the completion of extensive workbooks. It is more flexible by enabling candidates to take into account and be credited for existing experience, prior achievement or prior learning.

Your advanced test, advanced instructor or other relevant qualification should, ideally, have been obtained within the past 4 years or you should have re-qualified within that time. The timescale may not apply to other qualifications you wish to have considered, such as a Teaching Certificate or Degree but you should illustrate, in a brief CV, how you are or have been using those skills.

The costs of the various qualifications are as follows:

Level 3 Award – Advanced Test and Cardington A etc - £80

Level 3 Certificate – RoSPA Instructor Qualification, Police Instructor and other instructor qualification approved by the DSA under the Fleet Driver Initiative) - £130

Level 3 Diploma – As for Certificate above with an additional Unit dealing with small business management or provision of proof of 2 years practical business management) - £175
