MORR - Managing Occupational Road Risk

SenseAbility

MORRSenseAbility is a virtual technology programme lasting approximately 20 minutes. Assuming the view of a front seat passenger, each participant will be led through a series of scenarios depicting certain driving environments (eg. urban, motorway, etc) and will encounter hazards/incidents typical of that environment.

What is Involved ?

A SenseAbility event can be organised for any in-company event or safety day, where a RoSPA representative will come along and set up the equipment for you to use. Individuals will complete the programme and recieve feedback on their ability to recognise hazards, and recieve a driver risk rating (high, medium or low).

RoSPA can also provide the technical equipment (which includes speakers and software). We can also connect our leptops to a plasma screens to provide the driver with a realistic driving view.

What is involved in the running of SenseAbility ?

The main focus of each of the six central scenarios has been taken from an insurance company’s records of the six most commonly reported incidents: collision with a stationary object, collision with rear of third party, personal injury, reversing, collision on roundabout, and changing lanes. Aside from the central incidents mentioned above, there will also SenseAbilitybe two or three minor potential hazards unfolding in each of the six scenarios so that the "driving experience" is more realistic and the hazards not too easy to detect. These are experienced drivers we are assessing so they should be able to cope reasonably well with a number of incidents unfolding before them.

As the participant progresses through the scenarios, he/she should realize when a potential hazard emerges and should register recognition that the driver has responded inappropriately by clicking the mouse. There is a small window of opportunity in which the user is expected to respond, and within this window there is a gradual decrease in the number of points that can be scored as the user takes longer to respond.

It is important for the participant to identify poor practice as early as possible since, in a real-life situation, this gives a driver more time to consider the correct course of action and in turn leads to a reduction in the number of accidents. As well as being awarded points for correctly identifying the driver’s incorrect actions, the speed at which an individual identifies the hazard, the reaction time, is also logged as it is reasonable to conclude that the sooner a person reacts to an instance of poor practice the better the driver. There will be a short trial at the start of the assessment to help familiarise each participant with the procedure involved and what is required of them since every second counts in a time-based assessment and results would be inaccurate if delays are caused by unfamiliarity. Once the individual is confident about what is required of them they may choose when to start the assessment proper.

Exxonmobil and RoSPA work together to help increase road safety

RoSPA were delighted when Stephen Gandy from Exxonmobil invited them to attend a health and safety fair to help increase road safety awareness. From both perspectives the day was very successful with excellent participation throughout the day.

“The aim of the event was to hold an interactive Health and Safety Fair where employees could spend 30-40 minutes of their working day looking at Health, Safety & Environment related stands in an interesting and informative way. RoSPA were invited along to raise awareness of Road and Driving Safety, and SenseAbility was an excellent piece of software which enabled our employees to test their driving awareness skills in an enjoyable way, and receive feedback on how to improve their driving and observation skills”

“It turned out to be one of the most popular features of the day. Over the few days after the fair, one of the main topics of conversation was who got the highest score, and which colleague beat who, so as far as raising awareness of hazards on the road, it worked."
