New Training and Quality Assurance Manager
Rick Wood has joined RoSPA’s Driver and Fleet Solutions team as Training and Quality Assurance Manager.
He will be responsible for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents’ portfolio of training courses and resources for managing occupational road risk.
Rick has more than 20 years’ experience working in the qualified driver training arena. He began as an instructor at Silverstone Circuit before moving to Drive & Survive where he became Head of Training.
He said: “I am passionate about driving and road safety and this opportunity with RoSPA will enable me to make a difference to the risks associated with driving for work.
“We will play a leading role in new initiatives to help organisations manage occupational risk, such as the EU introduction of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence for bus, coach and lorry drivers.
“There are proposals in the pipeline for the Continuing Professional Development for driving instructors. With RoSPA already providing entry qualification to the fleet driver training register via the National Diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction, CPD will be a natural extension of training and qualifications that will be available.”
Rick, of Binley Woods, Coventry, has maintained his qualification as a Grade 6 driving instructor, and has many advanced driving qualifications. He holds a licentiate membership from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
Rosemont Pharmaceuticals do RoADTest
Rosemont Pharmaceuticals Ltd is taking a proactive approach to road safety by enabling all of its staff who get behind the wheel for work to undergo advanced driver training.
Around 70 employees of the Leeds-based firm, which develops, manufactures and markets liquid medicines for people who have swallowing difficulties, will be taking ROADTest, the only advanced driving test designed specifically to meet the needs of business motorists.

Gary Knowles, Supply Chain Manager, said: “We have about 50 fleet vehicles and everybody who drives one of the cars will attend the ROADTest course.”
Senior staff with company cars, employees who drive the firm’s delivery van and the 35 sales staff are among those going through the scheme.
Until now, Rosemont Pharmaceuticals has put its staff through a one-day driver training course.
Mr Knowles said: “We wanted to do something that was a bit more thorough. We like ROADTest because it ends with an advanced driving test, which grades drivers. We will use the grading system to help us identify areas for further development.”
Because of its high proportion of field-based staff, Rosemont Pharmaceuticals has arranged for two of its drivers to meet up with a ROADTest trainer at a location convenient to them.
The drivers will undergo an initial day’s training, followed by a second day of training a few weeks later - the interval between training days enabling behavioural change behind the wheel to become embedded.
Drivers then undergo a third day with the trainer, which involves a hazard perception assessment, theory and practical tests.

The whole process for Rosemont Pharmaceuticals drivers is designed to take place over about five weeks.
Mr Knowles said that work-related road risk was an issue that could not be ignored by any responsible company.
“The majority of our drivers are sales people,” he said. “They drive many miles and spend a lot of time in their cars, and it is important that they drive as safely as possible for their own benefit and well-being. For their own personal safety, and the safety of others, we want to make them the best drivers that they can be.
“As an added benefit, we hope that the improvement we see in driving will reduce the number of accidents we have. At the moment, we have one major incident a year and many very minor accidents. We want to eliminate as many accidents as we can.”
ROADTest, which was developed jointly by RoSPA and DriveTech (UK) Limited, sets the benchmark standard for “at work” driving. Candidates are graded at one of four levels - from gold, which recognises a truly tremendous achievement, to un-graded, which signifies that more work is required.
Successful drivers receive a certificate that is valid for three years and they can also apply to have their achievement upgraded to a BTEC-accredited qualification by applying to Edexcel.

RoSPA and Allianz Commercial Join Forces
Allianz Commercial and RoSPA have joined forces to promote the importance of effective risk management for company car and van fleets.
The exclusive partnership entitles Allianz Commercial motor fleet customers access to a range of services provided by RoSPA at preferential rates. The services available include: reviews by consultants to assess current road risk profile and provide recommendations for improved risk control, an online risk assessment and compliance tool, defensive driver training courses and an online driver profile assessment.
Commenting on the partnership, Jon Dye, Commercial Motor Manager, Allianz Commercial, said:
“As a responsible insurer, we are dedicated to providing advice and guidance designed to help brokers and customers manage and control risk more effectively. We are delighted to be working with RoSPA and to be at the forefront of highlighting the importance of road safety.”
Simon Protano, Head of RoSPA Driver and Fleet Solutions, added:
"The partnership between RoSPA and Allianz is a major breakthrough in providing a complete solution for managing occupational road risk. With Allianz's network of brokers around the UK, RoSPA will be able to reach a much wider marketplace, including SMEs, which for a number of years have had difficulty accessing quality driver training and risk management solutions."
Allianz motor fleet products are widely recognised as market leading and in addition to the new RoSPA partnership other recent enhancements include:
· New Motor Fleet section within the company risk management website Risk Director

RoSPA 'Bonus' to Make Company Drivers Safer
Company car drivers trained by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents are to get a bonus which will benefit them and their employers - and should keep them safer on the road.
The Society will give those taking its on-road driver training one year’s free associate membership of RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders helping them to develop their driving further. Benefits will include up-to-the-minute road safety information and discounts on some products.
RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders aims to reduce accidents by promoting an interest in road safety and improving driving standards, knowledge and skill. The scheme will spread the word about advanced driving to a wider audience, providing an opportunity to influence the families of fleet drivers as well.
The Fleet Associate Membership will apply to anyone taking on-road driver training through RoSPA’s Driver and Fleet Solutions Department from October 1, 2007. It is hoped fleet associates will be encouraged to join one of more than 50 local groups around the UK* where they can receive free training towards an advanced driving test if they wish.
They will also get RoSPA road safety e-bulletins, Care on the Road magazine, a 15 per cent discount on breakdown cover with GEM Motoring Assist and 10 per cent discounts on Halfords products and services.
Simon Protano, Head of RoSPA Driver and Fleet Solutions, said: “We hope many of the associate members will want to continue improving their driving to advanced level and will also encourage family members to join a local group and pass their advanced test.
“As people who are advanced drivers are 25 per cent less likely to be involved in a collision, it has to be good news for employers if those using company vehicles meet the highest standards.
“Employers will be playing their part in making our roads safer and will know their staff have access to the latest road safety information to enhance their driving knowledge.”
New Head of DFS
A new Head of Driver and Fleet Solutions has been appointed at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
Simon Protano will develop RoSPA’s portfolio of training courses and resources for managing occupational road risk, as well as overseeing the RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders network.
He has substantial experience working within the driver training arena, starting out as a driving instructor with BSM, and has held senior positions with The Instructor College and more recently IAM Fleet.
He said: “I am delighted to join RoSPA and to have such a great opportunity to make a significant contribution to road safety.
“We know that driving is the most dangerous thing that the majority of people do in the course of their working lives and I will be looking for new opportunities to help organisations of all sizes manage occupational road risk. It is an exciting time within the fleet industry, with preparations continuing across the EU for the introduction of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence for bus, coach and lorry drivers. I am keen that RoSPA continues to play a major role within the sector and to be at the forefront of new developments.
“I am also keen to expand the number of volunteers involved in running local RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders groups which play a valuable role in road safety by improving driving and riding standards, knowledge and skill.”
Simon, of Middlewich, Cheshire, has maintained his qualification as a Grade 6 driving instructor, and has also gained advanced driving qualifications. He holds a Fellowship from the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management and is an Associate Member of the Institute of Car Fleet Management.
Anther recent addition to RoSPA’s Driver and Fleet Solutions team is Roxanne Woodiwiss who has taken up a position as business development officer.
