Behavioural Safety

Failures in human reliability, whether slips and lapses, mistakes or violations, are a significant factor in more than 85% of accidents, and arguably one of the greatest challenges to those responsible for ensuring higher levels of health and safety performance in places of work.

Ryder-Marsh (Safety) Ltd - Conference Founder6th Behavioural Safety Best Practice Awards & User ConferenceWhile organisations still need to focus on improving technological safety and the operation of their health and safety management systems, there has been a growing realisation that behavioural safety has a major contribution to make in ensuring compliance with systems and procedures. Behavioural safety is not a standalone solution and, for many organisations that have not used an appropriate methodology, success has been patchy with poor or mixed results.

Nevertheless the huge growth of interest in this field of risk management has been driven by the increasing number of organisations worldwide who want to tackle the notorious ‘plateau’ effect in their safety performance, which other traditional safety approaches have failed to solve. Understanding human behaviour in an organisational context is complex and challenging but highly necessary to complete the final piece in the health and safety risk management jigsaw.
