Gallery Suites 17&18 | NEC Birmingham | Thursday 15th May 2008

2.2 million people work in Britain’s construction industry, about 10% of the UK working population, making it the country's biggest industry. In 2006/7 there were 77 fatal injuries to construction workers, a dramatic increase from 59 deaths in the previous year. A major part of the increase was due to a rise in fatal injuries in the housing sector with 37 deaths; this is a sector where construction activity is set to expand over coming years. In the last 25 years, over 2,800 people have died from injuries they received as a result of construction work. Many, many more have been injured or made ill.

This conference will:

  • Highlight the key health and safety challenges facing the construction sector
  • Update you on how recent changes to the law will impact your organisation
  • Brief you on HSE’s current priorities and planned campaigns
  • Focus on organisational and individual competence
  • Provide authoritative advice on managing contractors
  • Present examples of good practice
  • Highlight successful solutions and provide a forum for discussion and networking

The higher standards challenge:
Government, industry, trades union leaders, safety specialists and victims' representatives are all agreed – it is crunch time for construction. The killing, maiming and damage to workers’ health just have to stop. Standards and expectations are rising, and Corporate Manslaughter means boards must redouble their efforts to lead the management of health and safety. Clients, contractors, suppliers and all key parties to the construction process must raise their game and in turn demand higher standards of competence and performance of partners.

The key conference:
At this year's Construction Health and Safety Conference, leading industry figures will set out clearly what has to change if death, injury and disease are to be removed from the construction equation, and national experts will share insights on emerging best practice. If you are involved in the management of construction health and safety at any level, whether as a director or senior manager, site level supervisor, safety rep or experienced health and safety professional, this is an event you simply must not miss.
