West Midlands Home and Leisure Safety Council
President: Mrs Joan Walley, M.P.
The West Midlands Home & Leisure Safety Council is dedicated to furthering the cause of home and leisure safety. The Council takes its membership from a variety of agencies and organisations representing the Counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands.
The Council’s mission is:
‘To reduce death, disability, injury and ill-health caused by accidents in and around the home and in the pursuit of leisure’.
The mission is supported by aiming to:
- Stimulate and support home and water safety activities of the representative bodies
- Increase awareness and knowledge of home and water safety matters throughout the region by the dissemination of information to the representative bodies
- Represent the views of the Council at a national level
The Problem in Context
Accidents continue to be a major cause of avoidable ill health, disability and death. The statistics remain alarming particularly for the most vulnerable groups within society.
Although there is a wide range of interventions available to help reduce the size and severity of the problem, tried and tested responses are still needed.
There is now greater emphasis on partnership working at a local level with evidence around the country of projects succeeding in reducing accidents, including those funded through the Department of Trade and Industry modernisation monies. Working locally, in partnership is the way forward for accident prevention and regional bodies, such as the West Midlands Home & Leisure Safety Council, can help to lead the way.
Benefits of Membership
The council actively encourages joint working and the sharing of good practice both nationally and locally to reduce home accidents.
Guest speakers regularly attend meetings to present on topical home safety issues.
Members are drawn from all statutory and voluntary agencies with an interest in accident prevention and a depth of knowledge and expertise.
Current initiatives, events and experience are shared through discussions at the meetings and through the distribution of a newsletter.
The West Midlands Home and Leisure Safety Council is affiliated to The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and is advised and supported by Sheila Merrill, Regional Liaison Officer from RoSPA.
The Council has two elected representatives on RoSPA’s National Home and Leisure Safety Committee, attended by Government representatives such as Department of Trade and Industry and British Standards Institute, giving opportunity to influence European and National policy and legislation.
The West Midlands Home and Leisure Safety Council is represented at RoSPA’s annual Home Safety Congress through sponsorship.
Membership
The current annual membership fee is £35 per organisation, which allows more than one delegate to attend.
Meetings are held three times a year at venues across the region.
