MORR™ : An International Comparisons Review

Conclusions

The strategy of each country aiming to address the risk of work-related road accidents depends on a number of issues such as the perceived scale of the problem (however in the majority of cases WRRTA are believed to be the main cause of work-related fatalities), the available statistics, and the safety culture of the country.

There are countries out there leading the way on addressing issues of work-related road risk and providing guidance to employers on how they can manage their road risk. The UK is in danger of missing the boat if it does not take on board lessons from an international perspective.

This research highlights important issues such as the scale of the problem, the approaches taken by governments, the legal issues, and research in the field. The question is how to take this work forward and allow it to act as a driver for influencing action from the HSE and Companies. A video conference might be too ambitious for RoSPA to organise but as a first step RoSPA could put up a web page which sets out the international scene and have links to other countries relevant web pages, documents, research and organisation contacts, which various bodies can contribute to in building up a useful resource for further initiatives on a national or international level. A discussion group could also be set up to get people talking.
