Help for teenage mums to improve safety in their homes will be one of the topics to be discussed at a major congress in Yorkshire, organised by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. The RoSPA National Home Safety Congress will also be looking at home safety issues for children, and social issues around safety for the elderly - including safe homes and exercising for older people. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warned today: "The only bangers being sold for bonfire night should be the sausages for barbecues." | 21/10/98 : PARENTS CAN BE MORE SCARY THAN ACCIDENTS |
Teenagers are more concerned about getting told off than the possibility of having an accident, according to the latest research commissioned by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Over 300 teenagers at two Wiltshire schools were asked to draw and write about someone their own age doing something risky. The most common example given was misbehaviour, including defying a parent, being rude to a teacher, and shoplifting. Full Story» |

| 20/10/98 : MOTOR SHOW 1998: Phone Distraction Test For Drivers |
Visitors to the British International Motor Show (Oct 21-Nov 1) will be able to prove to themselves the dangers of using a hands-free mobile phone while driving. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is offering a drive on a simulator to show how reaction times are slowed when using a mobile phone and how concentration is affected in the minutes after a call has ended. Seventeen leading companies and organisations have joined RoSPA in a ‘get tough’ call to the authorities for action to reduce the number of accidents involving motorists travelling for work. Two top organisations are joining forces to provide a new course for a key qualification for health and safety professionals. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and Norwich Union Risk Services are developing a joint National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health Diploma Part II course. This is replacing the old-style NEBOSH Diploma course and supports the Part I Diploma course provided by each organisation. Full Story» |

Free safety advice and guidance on how to be a "Good Neighbour" are now on offer to firms from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents to mark European Health and Safety Week (Oct 19-25). In addition, RoSPA’s affiliated Occupational Health and Safety Groups will be staging a variety of events all over the country.
