SAFETY MADE FUN FOR CHILDREN
Two new children’s resources featuring activities and stories to teach safety awareness have been launched by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
Safe Start and Small Beginnings, both sponsored by Domestos, are aimed at pre-school and infant children.
Safe Start is spiral bound with over 100 fun activities for youngsters, including recipes and photocopiable activity sheets. The activities operate around 12 themes.
They are: Myself, Holding Hands, The Senses, Stop Look and Listen, Colour, Shape, Size, Movement, Vehicles and Traffic, Crossing Places, Seasons and Weather, and People Who Help Us.
The 32 recipes are linked to further activities around health and safety issues and every child will gain a sense of achievement from the tasks.
Small Beginnings is a leaders’ resource pack, for those working in early years settings. It features 30 developmental lesson plans incorporating 30 specially written stories from BBC Playdays writer and children’s author, Jan Page.
There are colour-coded lesson cards on five themes: Ourselves, At Home, Out And About, The Wider World, and Seasons, which include guidance notes, objectives and suggestions for further activities.
Martin Gomberg, RoSPA Safety Education Adviser, said: "These new publications are the latest addition to RoSPA’s collection of safety education resources. Each provides a range of experiences to promote the child’s active involvement in making increasingly confident decisions about their own safety. Safe Start and Small Beginnings, as their titles suggest, begin with safety awareness."
Safe Start costs £24.99 (£21.24 for RoSPA members) and Small Beginnings costs £19.99 (£16.99 for RoSPA members). Both are available from RoSPA Customer Support, Edgbaston Park, 353 Bristol Road, Birmingham, B5 7ST
