RECORD 870 FIRMS CELEBRATE STAYING SAFE WITH RoSPA

Almost 870 businesses and organisations from across the UK are to be honoured by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents for their outstanding safety records over the past year.

The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards, sponsored by RMC, once again attracted a record number of successful entries. The UK’s premier occupational safety award - the Sir George Earle Trophy - has been won by ScottishPower plc for its exceptional safety record.

RoSPA will also be presenting the Eagle Star Trophy for training to Southern Birmingham Community NHS Trust, Community Hospitals Division, and the Norwich Union Award for small businesses, to Teambuilding and Leadership of Perthshire.

And a new award - the Order of Distinction - will be given out for the first time to three different companies who have all achieved a minimum of 15 consecutive RoSPA gold awards.

All branches of business and industry will be represented at RoSPA’s award ceremony which takes place on May 11 and 12 at the Stakis Birmingham Metropole Hotel.

Roger Bibbings, RoSPA’s Occupational Safety Adviser, said: "RoSPA award winners demonstrate the value of investing in occupational health and safety.

"With one million workplace injuries a year and 2.1 million cases of ill-health, caused or made worse, by work, strong health and safety management is imperative. If more companies showed this kind of commitment there would be a dramatic reduction in the figures."

The presentations will be made during two special award days running alongside the Health and Safety Expo 99 Exhibition and RoSPA’s Occupational Health and Safety Congress at the NEC, Birmingham, on May 10-12. Some presentations will also be made at RoSPA Scotland in the autumn.
