06/11/00 : SHARING IDEAS ON HOME SAFETY WILL SAVE LIVES

The RoSPA National Home Safety Congress today pinpointed the huge value of sharing ideas and good practice in reducing the annual UK toll of 2.8 million home accident injury victims. The wide range of professionals who work in home safety, coupled with regional variations in local government structures to tackle the issue, mean that multi-agency initiatives are fast becoming the blueprint for success. 02/11/00 : WET-WEATHER INCREASES BONFIRE DANGERS

The wet weather that has been sweeping the country could lead to bonfire tragedies in the next few days, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warned today. RoSPA fears that people may be tempted to use petrol, paraffin or meths to start fires in damp conditions. Full Story»


27/10/00 : "SILENT KILLER" LURKING IN NORTHERN IRELAND HOMES

People living in Northern Ireland are three times more likely to be killed from carbon monoxide poisoning than anywhere else in the United Kingdom, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warned today. To raise public awareness, a roadshow organised by RoSPA and coordinated locally by environmental health departments, will be making stops throughout Northern Ireland next month in a bid to cut deaths and poisoning incidents. 31/10/00 : REGISTRATION SCHEME NEEDED FOR FIREWORK DISPLAYS

A national registration scheme for bonfire and firework displays was called for by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents today. RoSPA believes the plan would help persuade more people to go to organised displays and would lead to a reduction in firework injuries. 30/10/00 : CLOCKS MOVE WILL SEE ACCIDENTS SOAR, RoSPA WARNS

Moving the clocks back this weekend will signal another surge in the number of road accidents, unless all road users begin to take more care, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said today. Dave Rogers, RoSPA Road Safety Adviser, said: "As soon as the clocks go back we start to see an increase in road accidents. 19/10/00 : COMPANY CARS NEXT FOR "BIG BROTHER" BLACK BOXES?

Company car drivers should be the next in line for black boxes like those being fitted in London police cars, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said today. Over the next three years the Metropolitan Police will fit black boxes in 2,900 patrol cars in a bid to reduce police collisions. The recorders will register speed and acceleration information, whether the siren and warning lights were on and other details which will help accident investigators. They will check how the car is being driven 30 seconds before and 15 seconds after an accident. Full Story»


17/10/00 : SEEKING A CURE FOR HEALTH WORKERS

Answers to one of the health and caring services’ biggest health problems will be sought at a top-level meeting on Friday, organised by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. RoSPA is hoping to come up with solutions to reduce the 5,000 employees in the health and social work sector needing time off work each year because of back injuries. Full Story»

Plans for a national network promoting home safety are to be announced at The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents annual home safety congress in November. The conference, "Sharing Good Practice", sponsored by William Levene, manufacturers of the Culinare SafetyCan, will be held at the Moat House Hotel, Stratford upon Avon, on November 6 and 7. 15/09/00 : NEW HEAD OF SAFETY EDUCATION FOR ROSPA

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has appointed Jean McEntire as head of its safety education department. Jean, a former OFSTED inspector and schools adviser for Shropshire County Council, supported schools on national curriculum issues.
