CONGRESS SEEKS ANSWERS TO MAKE DRIVERS SAFER

Standards of driving must be improved if Britain is to see a substantial reduction in the number of road traffic accidents and casualties, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warned today.

To find solutions to the problem, RoSPA is seeking experts to address its annual congress, Safer Driving - The Road To Success. The conference, in association with Britax, will be held at the Stratford Moat House Hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon, March 4-6, 2002.

Despite significant reductions in the number of deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads, more than 3,400 people still die each year, and almost 40,000 are seriously injured.

The design of highways and vehicles has improved drastically over the last two decades, roads and cars are safer than ever before, but driver attitude and behaviour has not evolved at the same rate.

Kevin Clinton, RoSPA Head of Road Safety, said: “Next year’s congress will explore risk factors of all types of drivers - from novice to older motorists and those who drive for their jobs.

“The conference aims to look at accident causes and to see what can be done to increase the effectiveness how drivers are currently educated, trained, licensed and monitored.

“It is essential road safety professionals continue to work together in a bid to meet the Government’s targets to cut death and serious injury on Britain’s roads by 40 per cent by 2010. This congress will provide an excellent opportunity for delegates to share ideas and draw on good practice.”

RoSPA’s road safety conference will be of interest to: researchers, practitioners, policy makers, road safety managers, road safety and accident prevention officers, highway safety engineers, driver trainers, police officers, health promotion or educational professionals, voluntary organisations and councillors.

Abstracts of 500 words should be sent to Kevin Clinton, Head of Road Safety, RoSPA, 353 Bristol Road, Birmingham, B5 7ST, or e-mail kclinton@rospa.com, no later than September 28, 2001. For further information, contact RoSPA on 0121 248 2000.
