TOP SAFETY HONOURS GO TO SCOTTISH FIRM

The winners of Scotland’s top occupational health and safety award are Ciba Specialty Chemicals Plc - Coating Effects of Paisley.

The announcement was made at the RoSPA Scotland Occupational Health and Safety Awards, sponsored by RMC, at the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow, last night.

The presentation made by Lord Brougham and Vaux, RoSPA vice-president, was for the highest standard of occupational health and safety performance by an organisation based and operating in Scotland.

Nearly 100 other awards were made to business and organisations throughout Scotland for their outstanding occupational health and safety performance.

Ciba also collected the chemical industry sector award for the whole of the UK. The other sector victors from Scotland were British Energy Generation of East Kilbride, who were joint Electricity Industry winners.

Scottish companies highly commended in their sectors were: T R Oil Services Ltd of Aberdeen – chemical industry; Talisman Energy (UK) Ltd Flotta Oil Terminal, Orkney – oil and gas industry; Scottish Power Generation Ltd, Glasgow and Scottish Power Generation Ltd Cruachan Power Station – electricity industry.

Commended were: Motherwell College – education and training; and National Semiconductor (UK) Ltd, Greenock – manufacturing industry.

Doug Russell, originally from Annan in Dumfriesshire, and now health and safety officer for the Union of Shop Distributive and Allied Workers, received RoSPA’s Distinguished Service Award.

James Warden, aged 77, of Markinch, Fife, was given a special award for his contribution to the cause of health and safety at work in Scotland. He was responsible for health and safety at papermakers Tullis Russell in Fife for more than 20 years and is an honorary vice-president of the Scottish Chamber of Safety.

Roger Bibbings, RoSPA Occupational Safety Adviser, said: “The RoSPA awards have once again demonstrated that many businesses and organisations in Scotland put health and safety high on their agenda. But we would still like to see more joining the scheme to demonstrate that they are making reductions in accidents and ill-health a clear business priority.”

Some Scottish awards were presented in May. A full list of winners is available.
