RoSPA ON AN AWARDS HIGH
A record 1,100 businesses and organisations are to be honoured at RoSPA’s Occupational Health and Safety Awards next week.
Most of the awards, sponsored by RMC Group plc, will be presented at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel at the NEC on May 21 and 22.
More than 1,000 winners are based in the UK, but awards are also given to organisations from overseas, including Malaysia, Portugal, United Arab Emirates, China, India, USA and Hungary.
The UK’s premier occupational safety award – the Sir George Earle Trophy – goes to Trant Engineering Ltd of Southampton.
The Norwich Union Trophy for small and medium-sized businesses has been won by Central (High Rise) Ltd, steeplejacks of Nottingham.
The RoSPA Occupational Training Award - for the company or organisation with the most effectively managed health and safety training programme - goes to The Associated Octel Company Limited of Cheshire.
The Astor Trophy, for the company with the best-managed occupational health programme, has been won by AWE plc, which manages and operates the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Berkshire.
Palmer & Harvey McLane Ltd, of Hove, East Sussex, are the first winners of the RoSPA trophy for managing occupational road risk. ScottishPower Fleet Business of Glasgow is highly commended.
The awards programme is now in its 47th year and covers all branches of business and industry.
John Howard, RoSPA Director of Safety Policy, said: “The awards are not just about the short term reduction in accidents at work. They are about ensuring organisations have robust health and safety management systems in place for the longer term. The awards reinforce the message that good health and safety reflects good business management.”
The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards run alongside Safety and Health Expo 2003, and the Society’s Occupational Safety and Health at Work Congress “Strengthening the Team Approach” at the NEC Birmingham. Some of the awards will be presented at RoSPA Scotland in September.
