HELP NEEDED TO MEET HOME SAFETY CHALLENGES

RoSPA wants to hear from safety professionals with ideas to advance the fight against home accidents.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is calling for papers for its national home safety congress in November on the subject New Challenges for Home Safety.

Sarah Colles, RoSPA Head of Home Safety, said: “The home safety cause has benefited greatly in the last three years from the injection of cash for local partnership projects paid for by the Department of Trade and Industry’s Modernisation Money.

“As that funding is now coming to an end, we must look for ways to sustain the best projects and ensure that others can use the lessons learned from them.

“Although home accident statistics are no longer being collected nationally, RoSPA has taken over the existing home and leisure accident databases and wants to ensure they are used to their maximum.

“The Department of Health is currently funding research into effective injury prevention. This information is being gathered and needs to be dispersed among home safety professionals so we can learn from the data and use it to our advantage.”

She said the changes meant challenging times for home safety professionals and the best way forward was to share ideas and use information collectively. The congress, in association with BabyDan, to be held at the Moat House Hotel, Chester, from November 15-16, will play an important part in this. Those interested in speaking should submit a paper of around 500 words and include their name, contact details, job and presentation title. The deadline is May 2, 2004. Proposals should be addressed to Sarah Colles at RoSPA, 353 Bristol Road, Birmingham B5 7ST, or e-mail scolles@rospa.com.

Presentations will be considered from those who can report on: -

  • Successful DTI Modernisation Money funded projects that have been sustained
  • Current home safety research projects
  • Methods of collecting and sharing home accident data
  • Funding opportunities
  • Ways to reduce inequalities in health

One speaker for each paper will be entitled to attend the congress free of charge. This includes accommodation and travelling expenses.
