BID TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK IN SCOTLAND

Scottish businesses and organisations wanting to keep their employees safe and fit for work will be able to learn from the experts at a major event organised by the Royal Society from the Prevention of Accidents.

The RoSPA Scotland Safety and Health at Work Congress Learning, Sharing, Moving Forward, sponsored by ESS, will be held at the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow, on September 15 and 16.

Provisional figures for 2002/3 show 36 employed and self-employed people were killed in occupational accidents in Scotland, 2,882 were involved in major accidents and 10, 258 had to have more than three days off work with injuries.

Roger Bibbings, RoSPA Occupational Safety Adviser, said: “Maintaining momentum for better health and safety at work is a tough challenge. The health and safety community needs to use every lever at its disposal to keep pace with change.

“It is important for employers to be open to new ways of thinking and to learn from the successes and failures of others. This conference gives them the ideal opportunity to hear from safety experts and also to take part in practical sessions.”

Most of the speakers have close links with Scotland and so have knowledge of the particular problems faced by employers there.

Delegates will be able to hear about the Health and Safety Commission’s new strategy for health and safety and look at issues such as the role of employers’ compulsory liability insurance in raising standards, embedding health and safety management in business education and new developments in compensation and rehabilitation.

Practical sessions will look at topics including: work-related road safety; tackling slips, trips and falls; and team-based approaches to health and safety management.

Sessions on health at work will deal with manual handling, managing asbestos in buildings, tackling stress, and promoting healthy working lives.

The congress is the premier meeting place for anyone involved in Scotland’s occupational safety world, including company directors, senior managers, health and safety professionals, risk managers and business advisers.
