SCOTTISH FIRM WINS TOP RoSPA SAFETY AWARD
More than 130 businesses and organisations have been honoured at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents annual Occupational Health and Safety Awards in Scotland.
RoSPA’s top occupational health and safety award for Scotland went to FMC Technologies Ltd of Dunfermline. The award is for the highest standard of occupational health and safety performance by an organisation based and operating in Scotland. Earlier this year, FMC won the UK’s premier occupational safety award, the Sir George Earle Trophy.
John Howard, RoSPA Chief Executive, said: “This award reflects the vigour and effectiveness of the company’s health and safety management programme. FMC Technologies Ltd has shown the comprehensive way in which the plant has been able to integrate health and safety into its day-to-day operations.”
The awards are sponsored by RMC Group plc, and were presented at the Hilton Glasgow Hotel last night (September 16). The scheme covers different areas of employment from business to the public sector.
In total, Scottish organisations won three Merit, 12 Bronze, 13 Silver, 63 Gold and 25 Gold medal awards. Another six awards were received by businesses that were highly commended or commended for their outstanding performance in their sectors. Organisations also received eight President’s awards – which show 15 years of excellent health and safety management - along with one Order of Distinction, for 20 years outstanding performance.
“The awards highlight a business or organisation’s success in managing the risk of occupational accidents and promoting the health of its workforce,” John Howard said. “They are about efficient business and safety management, not just a low accident record, which can be a matter of chance.
“Employers that take part in the scheme are those that invest in the well-being of their staff for the long-term benefit of their business.”
The awards followed the Society’s Occupational Safety and Health at Work Congress “Learning, Sharing, Moving Forward”, sponsored by ESS - Support Services Worldwide, in Glasgow.
