SPREADING SAFETY MESSAGES AT LOCAL LEVEL REAPS REWARDS

Local occupational health and safety groups have been rewarded for their commitment to making the workplace safer during 2004.

More than 80 groups located throughout the United Kingdom are affiliated to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. They provide a local forum for communicating health and safety information and offer help to employers, particularly small businesses.

The Alan Butler Memorial Awards for Excellence, sponsored by BT, are given to those groups that are clearly outstanding in their field.

Lord Brougham and Vaux, RoSPA vice-president and president of the National Health and Safety Groups Council, presented award winners with their certificates at the House of Lords. Two groups - Birmingham Health, Safety & Environment Association (BHSEA) and Lancashire Occupational Health & Safety Group (LOHSG) – were presented with awards to mark their 75th anniversaries.

The groups fall into two categories, large and small. Large groups are those with 65 or more members, small ones consist of less than 65 members.

Award winners were: the London Occupational Health, Safety & Hygiene Group - best programme for large groups; Cambridge Occupational Safety Group - best overall programme small groups; Bradford Area Occupational Health and Safety Forum - best seminar/workshop; and Northern Ireland Safety Group - best communication. They all received a prize of £300 for their good work.

Roly Buss, awards co-ordinator for the National Health and Safety Groups Council, said: “These types of award are very important to local safety groups, as they help the wider community to recognise the good work that is being done. They make others aware of the hard work and dedication that is involved in promoting safety in the workplace.

“Safety groups are an essential part of spreading awareness at a local level. They provide people with an opportunity to get involved in safety, and are a place for them to network and generate new ideas.

"In sponsoring the awards, BT recognises that as a large organisation which takes health and safety seriously, it is helping smaller companies to improve their own safety by encouraging the activities of health and safety groups.”
