GOLDEN DAYS FOR RoSPA HEALTH AND SAFETY AWARD WINNERS

Fifty years of recognising health and safety excellence will be marked next week when more than 1,300 businesses and organisations receive awards from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards Golden Jubilee celebrations take place on Wednesday and Thursday (May 10-11) at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel, NEC. The awards are sponsored by NEBOSH – the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health.

Errol Taylor, RoSPA Acting Chief Executive, said: “We are proud that our awards scheme has made a major contribution to raising the profile of good health and safety practice for 50 years. It goes from strength to strength and ensures that employers have robust health and safety management systems in place as well as a good safety record.”

RoSPA’s premier award, the Sir George Earle Trophy, has gone to Naval Base Commander Devonport, Plymouth. It also won the National Defence Industry Sector.

The Sir George Earle Trophy winner is chosen from the winners of the 20 sector awards, which are competitive and honour the best businesses and organisations in different sectors.

The Norwich Union Trophy for small and medium-sized businesses has been won by Rainbows Children’s Hospice, Loughborough, Leicestershire.

The Astor Trophy, for the company with the best-managed health programme, has been awarded to Royal Mail Group.

The RoSPA Training Trophy, for the company or organisation with the most effectively-managed health and safety training programme, has gone to G E Health Care, the Grove Centre, Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

BMW (UK) Vehicle Distribution Centre, Thorne, Doncaster, won RoSPA’s trophy for Managing Occupational Road Risk.

The Society will also be presenting 528 gold, 262 silver, 107 bronze and 19 merit awards. In addition, there will be 242 gold medals, 92 President’s Awards and 20 Orders of Distinction, which recognise achievement sustained over set numbers of years.

The awards are presented over two days at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole, with main awards being given out at two prestigious gala dinners. Some of the awards will be presented at RoSPA Scotland in September.
