RoSPA Press Office : Press ReleaseMay 5 , 2006 Businesses will benefit if they involve the whole workforce in striving for higher standards of health and safety performance, a national conference organised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents will be told next week. The RoSPA Safety and Health at Work Congress Protecting People, Adding Value will be held at the NEC, Birmingham, May 9-11, and is sponsored by EDF Energy. Lord Hunt of Kings Heath, Department of Work and Pensions Minister with responsibility for health and safety, will make the keynote speech on Tuesday. The event takes place as the Health and Safety Executive launches a major consultative initiative on workforce involvement. Roger Bibbings, RoSPA Occupational Safety Adviser, said: “High standards of health and safety performance are increasingly being regarded as a sign of business efficiency and professionalism. The whole workforce needs to be involved in order to achieve sustainable change. “New legislation, guidance and enforcement initiatives by the HSE and local authorities are causing businesses to rethink their approach to tackling ongoing problems. Everyone from the boardroom to the shop floor has to play a part if they are to be successful.” The aim of the congress is to provide a forum in which health and safety professionals and others concerned with accidents and ill-health prevention at work can learn about latest policy developments. Case studies will show them successful applications of new thinking. On Tuesday, key themes will include enhancing the leadership role of directors, developing more effective workforce consultation and extending the health-at work agenda to promote the well-being of the workforce. Risk aversion, behavioural safety, safety for trainees, workplace transport and occupational road risk will be among the topics on the following two days. Health subjects include tackling stress at work, improving absence management, safety and the ageing workforce and obesity. The congress runs alongside Safety & Health Expo 2006. The format allows delegates to “mix and match” sessions so that they can explore topics most relevant to their business and still find time to visit the exhibition.
