RoSPA Press Office : Press ReleaseJuly 14, 2006 The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is staging a conference to encourage more people to take up the challenge of reducing injuries at home. Ten people in the UK die every day as a result of a home accident and 8,000 seek medical treatment. The most vulnerable are the very young and the very old - particularly the socially disadvantaged. RoSPA’s National Home Safety Congress (November 6 – 7) will highlight successful home safety projects so that others can learn how to tackle the country’s biggest accident problem. It is hoped the positive examples will persuade more individuals and organisations to play their part in making homes safer. The conference, sponsored by the Electrical Safety Council, has Sharing Success as its theme and will be held at the Majestic Hotel, Harrogate. As well as looking at local and national initiatives to prevent home accidents, delegates will also be able to consider the European perspective. Mathilde Sengolge of the Austrian Safety Board will explain the European Child Safety Alliance’s Home Safety Campaign. Other speakers include: Carolyn Cripps, Director Children’s Fire and Burn Trust; Lorraine Carney, Campaign Manager, Electrical Safety Council; Janet Ryan, Family Well-being Worker, Barnardos; Geralyn Ainsworth, Project Manager North and West Belfast Health and Social Services Trust; and David Radford, Senior Health Promotion Officer, NHS Greater Glasgow. The conference will be of interest to home safety officers, accident prevention officers, health visitors, primary care teams, environmental health officers, trading standards officers, housing officers, Sure Start officers, fire prevention officers, community practitioners and safety product manufacturers.
