| 10/06/04 : MORE DROWNINGS FEARED AS HOT WEATHER CONTINUES |
Following a week of drowning tragedies and with more hot weather forecast over the weekend, RoSPA is urging people wanting to cool off to go to a supervised swimming pool or supervised beach. At least three youngsters have drowned in the last few days and the Society fears there will be more deaths unless people heed the warnings not to swim in inland open waters such as ponds, lakes, rivers, reservoirs and canals. The number of accidental drownings in the UK has fallen for the third year running, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accident revealed today. But as the Bank Holiday weekend approaches, RoSPA is concerned that tragedies will increase again unless people heed warnings to swim only at properly supervised swimming pools and beaches. Changing fashions and the latest crazes lead to more accidents, a new report detailing how people in the UK hurt themselves at home and at leisure reveals today. | 02/02/04 : HEATWAVE CAUSED RISE IN DROWNING TRAGEDIES |
Last summer’s heatwave led to a big increase in drownings, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents revealed today as it called for help in preventing further tragedies in years to come. At least 153 people drowned in June, July and August compared with an average of 135 in the same spell during recent summers, according to provisional RoSPA statistics. With the holiday booking season approaching its peak, new figures from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents reveal that at least 60 UK nationals drown abroad each year. As the big freeze continued today, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warned people not to risk their lives by walking on frozen lakes, ponds, reservoirs and canals. Water sites used for sport and recreation could be facing similar water quality checks to those for bathing beaches, RoSPA's National Water Safety Conference in Plymouth was told.
