Plugs and Fuses
Replacing Fuses
Plug fuses
If an appliance stops working, switch off immediately (turn off appliance itself and the socket outlet if both have switches). Remove plug, unscrew top and take out fuse. Fit a substitute fuse or check existing fuse as described below and replace if necessary. Also check connections for loose or disconnected wires. Refit plug cover. If the appliance still fails to work, and the main fuse is intact, get the appliance checked by an approved electrician.
Checking fuses
Remove base of a metal cased torch. Place one end of fuse on bottom of battery and other end on torch casing. If bulb fails to light when the torch is switched on, the fuse has blown.
Moulded plugs
Some appliances have a ready fitted plug of the non-rewirable type. To replace the fuse, switch off and unplug the appliance. Prise the fuseholder out with a screwdriver, replace the fuse and refit the fuseholder.
Do not use a plug without a fuseholder. Never use a fuse greater than the size shown on the plug.
Faulty plugs
Should a moulded plug become damaged or faulty you should cut it off and make sure it is disposed of properly. Do not leave it where children may find it and plug it into a supply socket with the obvious consequent danger.
