Buying a PlugPlugs and Fuses

Buying a Plug
All modern wiring systems use fused plugs with flat pins. If you have any round pin sockets in your home, the wiring may be old and needs checking. All 13 amp flat pin plugs now sold are required by law to conform to British Standard BS 1363 and have sleeved pins. To select the correct plug fuse size see the table on the back page of this leaflet. For advice on replacing main fuses, please see the Electricity and You Fuse Boxes section.

This symbol shows the fuse has been tested independently for safety. This symbol shows the fuse has been tested independently for safety.

All new 13A plugs are required by law to have words such as: 'Approved by ASTA Ref. XX' or 'BSI App. Lic. XX' either on the plug or on a card accompanying the plug. Plugs marked BS 1363/A are stronger.
